Last year we saw the mobile gaming industry explode with the worldwide phenomenon Pokémon Go. According to research by App Annie, Pokémon Go launched on July 5, 2016 and made over $950 million in revenue by the end of 2016. In addition to the money the game made, Pokémon Go was also the most downloaded app worldwide in 2016 for both the iOS and Google Play app stores.
With fresh concepts like virtual reality headsets, consoles and wearable tech introduced to the public, growth in the computer and video game industry is expected to continue to rise.
Over 400 colleges, universities, art and trade schools across the country offer video game-related courses or degree programs. Within the program concentrations can range from game art and design, computer animation, virtual technology and more. Upon successful completion of those programs, the average annual salary for a video game industry employee is about $95,000.
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) Foundation aims to enhance education and create a positive social impact in communities across the country. Since 2007, the ESA Foundation has provided scholarships for next generation of gaming innovators.
Each year, the ESA Foundation awards up to 30 scholarships of $3,000 each to 15 graduating high school seniors and 15 current college students pursuing video game-related degrees. Scholarships are offered for full-time undergraduate study at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the USA.
